In a nutshell, muslim women in harvard wanted the gym to be a female facility only during certain hours... and this shows "open mindedness" and respect towards them... no... this shows that muslims obviously can't respect rules and regulations that are in other countries, and can't respect their culture for shit... Why don't they ask for female only hours in shopping malls? since everyone gets a good look at them there? oh wait... yeah... you can wear "covering" clothes to the mall... but you have to wear spandex in the gym? what's wrong with baggy pants, a large t-shirt and no make up on in the gym???
you know... last year here in aramco, they suggested "co-ed" hours in the gym once or twice per week... i was excited cuz i can finally teach my wife how to exercise with correct form and look after her progress personally... but no... the people were furious!!! how could they suggest that... don't they respect our culture????? ... well, don't fucking go to the gym during those hours if you don't like it... they said "NNNNOOOOOOO!!!!!!! THIS WILL OPEN UP OTHER DOORS THAT ARE EVEN WORSE!!!! THERE IS NO WAY!!!" .... but when we leave our country, we want to take our culture with us...

i agree with you on respecting your host country's laws and traditions, after all, that's what us expats have to do over here...

ReplyDeletebut, from what i see everyday in "khutbahs" or interviews with religious people, whenever they bring up america or the west or christians, they start making up stories like all christian groups gather on certain days and have sex with each other... or it's normal for women in america to marry donkeys and men to have sex with animals and the government is ok with that...

and by the way, most saudi think ALL american women are whores... seriously... i don't care what anyone else says... if you're educated, ok... fine... you might not think that... but if you aren't (like the majority of saudis)... i'm sorry, but it's true.
i've got you.. just a pitty though that any westerner is seen as a christian, which is definately not the case! christians are not permitted to be involved in these things. also, the same as in islam, not all christians are true followers of their faith...

Another thing, your analogy between Saudi and the US is totally unrealistic. You are doing the same thing as the religious guys you loath by comparing two things that are not comparable.
One last thing, I think that the best solution for these things is to have a secular state that does not cater/support any certain religious group. If you want to do something religious or your religoun restricts you from something, build your own private place.

ReplyDeletesorry if you misunderstood. i didn't compare saudi arabia to the US, i was showing how muslims do not accept other "open minded" ideas, and expect non-muslims to abide by their law and customs (even if they are in a camp that does not abide by those laws because it is off limits)... but when they're in the states (muslims, and not arabs) they demand for people to be "open minded" about their religion.
THERE IS NOTHING IN ISLAM THAT SAYS WOMEN CAN'T WORKOUT WITH MEN IN THE SAME GYM!!!! THEY CAN WEAR BAGGY CLOTHES THAT COVER THEM UP AND BEANIE TO COVER UP THE HAIR!!! THIS IS BASICALLY A DESPERATE CRY FOR ATTENTION, ESPECIALLY AFTER THE FACT THAT THEY WEREN'T IN THE GYM IN THE DESIGNATED TIME!!!
another VERY important issue regarding this crap is that in the united states, there is a huge franchise of female only gyms called "curves"... why don't they sign up there? ooohhhh... right... i bet it's too inconvenient or far away...
lets face it... the only reason harvard even agreed to do this is probably because one of those students fathers donated a generous amount of money to the university.
let's be real... that's how shit goes these days... whether it's in saudi, the US, or Zimbabwi... it's not about respecting culture or religion...
I have read hundered of comments from LIBERAL americans about this issue... trust me... my comments are considered supportive to these girls when compared to others.
Just aside comment, this is the 1st time I know about the ( "co-ed" hours in the gym) It is silly that they reject the gym and accept the pool.
